Deeply-thought out and potential game-changer in the fight against obesity

It seems to me that in writing Wired to Eat, Robb Wolf spent a great deal of time thinking hard about how to present his ideas in a way that will get traction with readers. It’s not so much a diet book but a book that takes a few steps back from the psychological and emotional gridlock involved in the subject and uses a language that is thoughtful, calm and with occasional bits of awfully brilliant humor, all the while presenting a smart case for how to think about food based on science and common sense. Remarkably, it’s both fun to read and vitally incisive. Wolf takes us along a line of thinking on why we as a society need to earnestly let go of the morality trap that so many people who struggle being overweight get stuck in—that being overweight is a failure of human willpower and character. Wolf painstakingly shows, through the lens of evolutionary biology, how the modern food industry (with the disturbing blessings of government subsidies) takes advantage of it (e.g. by employing food scientists that are masters of dialing up the hyperpalatability of junk food). As Wolf remarks in regards to the old potato chip marketing promise about how you can’t eat just one, “I’ll take that bet every time.” Last week I read an article on Politico on the obesity and in one of the photos was a six-year-old girl, overweight, who was being taught how to use a treadmill. I hope this book gets in the hands of those who were coaching her.

Didn’t deliver enough on the promise of the 7 day Carb test

The book is very well researched and written. Mr. Wolf has a fun tone and feels like an ally throughout the book. That said, I think the book would be confusing to someone new to the paleo/ancestral eating way of life, and I think it really falls down on its central promise. Most of the book is spent on background telling you why eating the standard American diet is bad and how it can hurt you (I’m pretty familiar, so didn’t find anything new here, but again, it’s well written and I know this is new news to much of America), and then there are some good recipes at the end.

The Paleo Diet Is More Misunderstood Than A Goth Kid Living In Arkansas

In WIRED TO EAT, Robb Wolf first explains how he got involved with Paleo, or the “ancestral diet.” Many years ago, he was very ill with ulcerative colitis: “I was facing a bowel resection, statins, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants. . . I thought I was going to die, and the idea was pretty appealing, considering how much my life and health sucked. I was a mess.” Out of desperation, he tried this “wacky” idea. Convinced (and healthier), he then made the Paleo philosophy an integral part of his life.

A thoughtful book on a touchy subject. Excellent for people who are brand new to carb-centric thought on nutrition.

This is an excellent book that covers a lot of actionable things about nutrition. I like how it actually takes an “experiment, analyze, and adjust” type of approach with nutrition. The author obviously knows nutrition–and even more importantly he knows the nuances that people will encounter when trying to dial in their nutrition. I like being able to run tests to verify things for me as a person. Even though there are technically more accurate ways to measure carb sensitivities, the methods used in this book are good enough in order to get your nutrition under control. It will allow you to make some serious progress compared to doing no analysis of your nutrition.

Needs more details on the HOW.

While I love the concept behind this book, I wish that it had been executed just a little bit better. The first half is explanatory about why you should be eating this way and why the concept works. That’s great, but very repetitive, with lots of salesy lines telling you why it will work if you just keep reading. I get that, only say it one or two times, not fifty, because I already bought the book.

Great book!

This book is easy to follow, extremely easy to understand. I loved the Paleo Solution and this book definitely delivers as a follow-up! I totally love the concept of finding the foods that are right for me! I got really caught up in the concept of PALEO and what constituted PALEO instead of asking myself is this a good food choice, does it work for me personally? Great read!

Just Read it!

As a primary care physician with a long-standing interest in the connection between diet and health, especially brain function, I found this book to be very informative and easy to read. Robb has a very personal writing style making it easier to adapt to complex life style changes. He carefully guides you through the steps you will need to once again take control of your health. I think this book will be helpful for both Paleo novices and those who have a broad experience with this approach.

Great explanation of how and why so many are overweight– good advice about how to eat healthy. Some new information; some new approaches. But mostly it’s the clear writing, supportive tone and thorough approach I appreciated.

Must read

If you’re a bit of a nerd, you’ll appreciate this book. It’s heavily documented. My personal experience with many experts is that totally full of shut. Robb IS the real deal. I’m an old school athlete that thought I had figured out. Until, that is, I hit my plateau. I had lost 60 lbs and felt smug. For four months, I gain and lost the same 3 lbs. The scale wouldn’t move. My scale is a professional balance scale. Clearly, not the problem. Couldn’t figure what the hell is wrong.
