It seems to me that in writing Wired to Eat, Robb Wolf spent a great deal of time thinking hard about how to present his ideas in a way that will get traction with readers. It’s not so much a diet book but a book that takes a few steps back from the psychological and emotional gridlock involved in the subject and uses a language that is thoughtful, calm and with occasional bits of awfully brilliant humor, all the while presenting a smart case for how to think about food based on science and common sense. Remarkably, it’s both fun to read and vitally incisive. Wolf takes us along a line of thinking on why we as a society need to earnestly let go of the morality trap that so many people who struggle being overweight get stuck in—that being overweight is a failure of human willpower and character. Wolf painstakingly shows, through the lens of evolutionary biology, how the modern food industry (with the disturbing blessings of government subsidies) takes advantage of it (e.g. by employing food scientists that are masters of dialing up the hyperpalatability of junk food). As Wolf remarks in regards to the old potato chip marketing promise about how you can’t eat just one, “I’ll take that bet every time.” Last week I read an article on Politico on the obesity and in one of the photos was a six-year-old girl, overweight, who was being taught how to use a treadmill. I hope this book gets in the hands of those who were coaching her.

In WIRED TO EAT, Robb Wolf first explains how he got involved with Paleo, or the “ancestral diet.” Many years ago, he was very ill with ulcerative colitis: “I was facing a bowel resection, statins, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants. . . I thought I was going to die, and the idea was pretty appealing, considering how much my life and health sucked. I was a mess.” Out of desperation, he tried this “wacky” idea. Convinced (and healthier), he then made the Paleo philosophy an integral part of his life.

Let me first say that the person who gave this book a 1-star review has to be smoking crack. I think it is highly likely that they do not like the ideas, theories and plan presented in this book simply because it requires them to admit they need to make changes they aren’t yet willing to make. To say that this information has been “out there” in the mainstream is simply hilarious! I could go on, but I’d rather write about why this book is so great.

One of the best books about overall health ever! Less dogmatic about “paleo” and all about individualization based on science and things like hormones, blood sugar, sleep patterns, social interactions and more. Robb always add humor to the science and he has a great way of explaining things in terms everyone can understand. I love that he also included, with caution, ideas and approaches for some of the more cutting edge ways to improve your overall health and happiness. It’s NOT a “diet” book, it’s a ‘how to build optimal overall health and happiness’ book.

This is one useful book! The 30 day Paleo starting point, along with 7 day carb testing, could help a plethora of people deal with multiple annoying health challenges. It contains great science and stories written with a wonderful sense of humor sprinkled in. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Loved the book. I think the best thing is if you have listened to Robb enough you can hear him reading the book to you as you read it. Great information, I have already done the 7-day carb test, my wife and I had way different reactions to carbs which gave some good usable information. My wife and I have been eating Paleo for 7 years and have read a lot of books in the scene. I feel like this one is one of the best to give to people who want to make a change in their life, but could be scared of paleo or don’t want to listen to the benefits.

Wish I had bought the paper book! I am one of those who reads, re reads, and underlines. Not easy to do on a Kindle. I bought and learned so much from Rob’s first book, especially what the ‘anti-nutrients’ are. This is a great review, and a good re-boot to a Paleo lifestyle. I just wish there was a Paleo beer!

Another home run for Robb Wolf, looking forward to trying the carb test. A very pleasurable read for a nutrition book, I like to read the words of someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and is willing to adjust thier stance with new information.
