It’s more complicated than the 30 Day Guide

I was very excited to get this book but am putting this in the “just ok” category. That said, I’m normally a huge Whole 30 fan and use the recipes from the Whole30: 30 Day Guide… all the time. Something that I appreciated from the 30 Day Guide was the simplicity of the recipes, most were kid friendly and included lots of one pot meals that work for busy people. That is not the case with the new recipe book.

Not for everyone

I LOVE Whole30. I preach it and I live it. The reason I am only posting 3 stars is because I am really disappointed in this cookbook, which I anticipated for months. I love crockpot meals and soups, and this didn’t hardly have anything like that. Most of these meals did not look very appetizing. I don’t want to have to purchase odd ingredients for that 1 meal and you’ll be doing that with every one of these recipes. I hope they come out with another cookbook that focuses more on altering the more common meals that we are comfortable with.

Great use of spices! Here’s a (long) list of spices you’ll need to make these recipes.

This book was a surprise hit for me! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much, and only bought it because I was actually doing a Whole30 in January 2017 (it went great! I recommend it—I assume you’re thinking about it if you’re reading this review). We’ve been vegetarian for about 7 years, so eating and cooking so much meat, well, let’s just say I needed some help. The first thing I was impressed with? The recipes are very creative! They are easy to follow, don’t take a lot of time (I have a baby and a toddler and work from home), I particularly loved the slow-cooker recipes that make extra (beef roast, etc) that is then used for different recipes later in the week. Genius!

Delicious recipes, not a necessity

I absolutely love this cookbook. When I first started Whole30 I felt really overwhelmed. Having the cookbook helped me stay motived as I kept pictures of my dishes, and started to experiment more on my own. Also, seeing the book on the kitchen counter held me accountable each day. Thinking back, I don’t think this book is a necessity though when doing the Whole30. Between google, Facebook, Pinterest etc there are so many ways to find delicious and creative Whole30 recipes as well. (Which I also kept researching). The majority of the recipes are meat based, I would not recommend this book for vegans/vegetarians. I was a little disappointed with the breakfast recipes. (can’t look at those eggs anymore!). Again, the internet will be your best friend for that. My favorite part of this book are the many dressings provided. Since commercial dressings/sauces are loaded in sugar it was so nice to be able to make my own Ranch, Caesar, etc. dressing (most of them have raw eggs in them).

Good source of recipes and very well balanced

Good source of recipes and very well balanced, though extreme. Not quite ready to commit fully, but gearing up and mentally preparing for a shift in focus and health. It’s a 30 day commitment that’s pretty radical if you love all. the. things. Cheese? Nope. Bread? Nope. Cream in my coffee? Nope. If God didn’t create it, you don’t consume it. The weight will DROP, although “this is not a diet”…ya, right (roll eyes). This is guaranteed to be a healthy change and nutritional boost, that’s why I’m still preparing myself for this challenge and expecting the plateau I’ve reached to shatter!

Good recipes. I’m a really accomplished cook, so I can take the recipes as a idea templates and make what I want. If you’re not an accomplished cook, then you will get great meals from this book! It’s also helpful to find alternative ingredients that are whole 30 approved.

Great recipe book for Whole30

We are a Whole30 family now. This book was a gift for my Mother-in-Law who is doing the diet now and has lost weight and is doing fabulously. We are so proud of her. I skimmed through the book before I gave it to her. My husband and I primarily live and eat by Melissa’s principles, even if we are not strictly 100% on Whole30 all the time. We never bought her recipe books because there are so many online, but if you love cooking and you are methodical and love to follow recipes, this book is so beautifully done. Lots of great recipes, and an ideal way of treating your body.

The best reference

Reading this book, and using it as a reference got me through my first Whole 30. I love Melissa Hartwig’s perspective, and she explains things in simple terms. Once I understood the science behind my body’s relationship with different foods, it was 10x easier to stick to the Whole 30 plan and remain motivated. I know people who try Whole 30 without getting the book—What?! It’s essential, especially for your first go at W30! 🙂

Whole 30; Wholesomely Good!

The Carnita recipe is EVERYTHING!!!!!!! I enjoyed going through this book and tried a few of the recipes. You will see some weird ingredients that may not be sold at your local grocery store but I’m a firm believer of omitting stuff you can’t read or don’t know! Most times, I stick with the basics and just throw in extra garlic. On the whole, I absolutely enjoyed making dishes from this book and it gave me a better relationship (if you will) with foods that I normally would go out to eat.
