I was trying to think of flowery things to say but come on! This book is just THE BOMB! I read it as someone who has learned A LOT about Nutritional Ketosis by following Jimmy and some of the doctors and other experts who contributed to this book. I loved that it wasn’t just a “been there, heard that” overview of Ketosis and what it can do for us. Jimmy and Dr. Westman manage to go deeper into the science for us while still bringing it around for the lay person or novice. I used to regularly test my blood ketones/mmols but the book moved me to go bust out my glucometer that has been gathering dust for a while. His step by step instructions on how to find your own thresholds for carbs and protein just got me all fired up again and will help me in my hacking pursuits. I’m no expert, I’m a soccer mom/school teacher, bio-hacker wannabe. This book is perfect for me because it clears up why some of my earnest efforts were not getting me the results I expected. It is also perfect for that family member or friend who is trying that Low Fat diet (with poor results) and doesn’t understand what you are doing and doesn’t really want to hear your explanations. The gift of this book to that person is a great, non-threating way to help them in their journey. As a teacher, I love a reference read that is not so dang dry!! Jimmy’s personality comes through to make this an easy, enjoyable read. BONUS: if you get the audio version, Jimmy is the one who does the reading. That’s kind of rare!

Often when you read a book for nutritional information, it leaves you with as many new questions as answers. Not so with Keto Clarity. This book answers any questions you may have as to why you should follow a more ketogenic diet, then tells you exactly, step by step, how to do it.

I waited until I read the entire book to do a review. This is the final book that I have read on a sting of books lauding the benefits of the low carbohydrate, high fat lifestyle. Everything I had read previous to this book expressed the science and theory behind becoming a “fat burner” vs. a “sugar burner”. They explained why the concept of low-fat everything was a terrible idea from it’s conception in the 1950’s and why eating low-fat has made our Nation fat and sick. We’ve been lied to by our nutrition scientists. I’ve been telling my patients the wrong things about diet for the past 30 years, and I also have a degree in nutrition. I, and our dietary guidelines, were wrong. This is elegantly outlined in the groundbreaking book “The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet” by Nina Teicholz. She made the medical community take notice and re-think the low-fat debacle. There are a slew of other books that say the same thing. However, most of these low carb, high fat (LCHF) books are rather technical and don’t actually tell you how to follow the principles behind becoming a fat burner. This book not only tells you the theory behind this new health movement, but gives you a step by step guide on how to to loose the weight you could never loose on all of those diets you have tried. This is not a diet book, since becoming a fat burner is the no-hunger way of loosing weight. It’s not anything like dieting. Diets fail. The author, Jimmy Moore, started at 410 pounds and tried all of the diets until he discovered what most of Americans are doing wrong. Strangely, this book was co-written by a number of nutritions experts in the field since Jimmy doesn’t have a bunch of initials after his name. What a great idea. A wonderful book written by someone who is credible since he lost so much weight, but backed by a number of credible nutritional experts and physicians. Highly recommended. Most of my staff are loosing weight on this program – medical assistant’s and nurses alike. They are all eating lots of fat and watching their lipid parameters improve greatly while enjoying extra energy. I have a happy and soon to be skinny staff. Yes, I apparently inspired my staff by loosing over 35 pounds myself over three and a half months by eating wonderful foods and not counting calories, ever. I am rarely hungry. There is more science behind this concept than the Paleo movement and explains why the Paleo and other similar diets work fairly well. This is a bargain in the kindle version. The best advice I can give my patients who want to loose weight and avoid disease is to read this book. Now I know why all of my skinny vegan and vegetarian patients who have been avoiding fat all of their lives are getting diabetes, having heart attacks and strokes. Remember this equation: Elevated Insulin Equals Inflammation and Fat Storage. And sugar burners have high insulin. Are you a sugar or a bat burner?

For those of you who’ve yet to be exposed to the fallacies of science inherent in our low fat, high carb government recommended making you fat and sick diet, i.e., the food/medicine/subsidy over truth business, prepare to have your mind blown. High fat? Low carb? Isn’t it a fad? Not on your life. After many decades of vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan eating, beside the frustration of certain conditions not clearing up and an extra 20 lbs of inflammatory fat that wouldn’t budge, I decided to give the whole Paleo business a try. After all, decades of modified versions of those eating plans were slowly deteriorating my health. Freaked out by the latest symptom, my teeth going south, I realized the last time I felt really good was as a 20-something, when I ate meat. I dove in. As my system calmed down, I immediately noticed I wasn’t hungry an hour after eating and the excess fat began to drop off. This led me back to revisit the low carb eating notion, which I’d run from years earlier, along with my new attitude of, “hey, the veg/high carb/high grain-based diet isn’t working, so let’s try this”. As a result I’m healthier at 62 than all those decades of “healthy” whole grains, high carb BS. This book is yet another brick in my arsenal of getting healthier and healthier. Highly recommended as the possibilities of using ketosis whether cyclically or not, holds a worthy potential for resolving many conditions, including auto-immune conditions, diabetes, obesity, etc., caused by letting your body burn sugar over fat. Check it out!

This book tells you the what, where, why, and how to do the ketogenic diet, i.e., converting your body into fat-burning ketosis, rather than dependent on glucose for fuel. After reading the book, Tripping Over the Truth, about the return to the metabolic approach to cancer, I became very interested in trying this. With Alzheimers, cancer, and diabetes in my family, I could only think of it as a win-win to do something so simple that could be so powerful. I have bought multiple copies for people who are going on the ketogenic diet for everything from cancer to just wanting to lose weight. It continues to be my go-to source for information. Written in a manner easy to comprehend, with sources and resources. I am pleased with this purchase and it has helped change my health. Atkins alone was not enough. This is the answer for me. I no longer need bp meds, blood sugar testing, arthritis meds, allergy meds, asthma meds, and I have tons of energy, and feel such a sense of well-being that people have started doing this diet because they see how it has changed my life. Jimmy Moore’s advice plus all the testimonials by well-respected researchers from teaching hospitals are well worth the read. As he suggested, I ordered a cookbook by Maria Emmerich, and it has been fabulous, making it easy to stay on the diet. No craving, no cheating, no hunger. There are recipes and even a grocery list in the book, however, so you don’t have to get a separate cookbook. I have given this book to family members and friends so they can start out right and refer to the book for trouble-shooting if they run into a problem. It is extremely valuable to have it in the beginning to avoid mistakes that would send a person back to a carboholic lifestyle.

To most physicians keto is half a word and is always followed by the second half, acidosis. Even the best cardiologist I know, said when I told him on a long bike ride that I had had eaten no carbohydrates and felt great and strong in nutritional ketosis, “be careful about going into acidosis.” Keto Clarity eliminates the mystery and fear that arises because of confusion about a normal metabolic pathway. The fact is that we all make some ketones during the night when our feeding is interrupted for more than a few hours.

That’s what my 24-year-old daughter Ruby said when we purchased this book two days ago and started the ketogenic diet yesterday. I’m 55 and post-menopause, have gone from my starvation weight of 148 (the skinny bitch/divorce diet) to my current 210, and I’ve been telling my doctors I’m sort of done with life lately if this pain, inflammation, fat, depression, and anxiety are what getting old is all about. I have acid reflux which appears even when I eat too much rice (I pretty much stopped eating gluten over the past two years but even rice causes that horrible indigestion). They think I might have Hashimoto’s, too. They think maybe anti-anxiety meds or anti-depressants. And Ruby has her own health issues, too, which the world seems to blame me for. She’s perfectly smart, beautiful and healthy. And she weighs 248 at 5’9″ which she’s been told is “morbidly obese.” When we walk out in the world together, I can see younger, thinner parents looking at me and judging me. What they don’t know is we’ve tried everything short of gastric bypass. So yesterday was miraculous. We both read the book together and it explained so much about our addiction to carbs. Any weird fears we had about trying this way of eating are just…gone. We love the way that the experts from Jimmy Moore’s podcasts are sprinkled throughout the text. These people are on the cutting edge or health and nutrition. We cannot believe how much real information is out there about this ketogenic lifestyle. Why didn’t we learn of it before? We’ve already been dieting, mostly avoiding wheat and sugar, but when we ate our first ketogenic breakfast and bought our ketosis strips and blood sugar kits (her starting glucose 78, mine 82 which shows that our fat condition at least doesn’t reflect diabetes or hypoglycemia, so there’s good news), we started feeling better immediately. Hours later, we were still full and laughing. Felt mildly hungry, ate some salami wrapped around cream cheese, felt full again immediately. We were laughing so hard when she said that about how we tend to hit the Kool-Aid hard. I woke up at six this morning after seven hours of deep sleep, kept reading Keto Clarity. Seriously, I am in love with you people who wrote this book. My whole body feels better–lighter, free of that burning arthritis pain. Thanks.

There’s a book called “The man who mistook his wife for a hat” and you just think – what on earth is that about? You don’t have this worry with a Jimmy Moore/Eric Westman collaboration – the book is exactly what it says on the cover: the definitive guide to the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet.
