Life Changing – In More Ways Than One

I am a runner so my eating has been centered around carbs. As a result, I love carbs. I have run several 1/2 marathons but wanted to do at least one full marathon – so at 43, I trained and completed my first full marathon in April. I did not do nearly as well as I had hoped and I noticed towards the end of my training I was experiencing what I would consider an extra amount of fatigue – I also lost no weight whatsoever during my training, something I always do. I chalked it up to too much training and figured after my marathon I would rest and get back to normal. A week after my marathon, I decided to hit the gym and start weight training but had no drive and just felt tired. This feeling just got worse – to the point I thought I needed to see the Dr.

I started the year stressed and just disappointed at how I didn’t take care of myself. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror, tired of the break outs, fatigue, and clothes not fitting. I felt like I needed to hit the reset button starting from the inside out. It Starts With Food gave me that much needed structure and guidance to set things right. I learned how to cook from scratch delicious meals and prepare them accordingly. The more I prepped nutrient-dense foods, the less I craved junk. My personal favorite is the scientific insight they give as far as understanding exactly what happens in your body with food and nutrients. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get on track. Though I’ve completed the 30 days, I now crave nutrient-dense whole foods and have gotten so used to meal prepping that I don’t plan on giving into stress eating or junk food again.

First Time Have Stuck with a Diet!

So basically this is the Paleo diet in a simplified, easy to follow format. I read it and thought this is easy, as I’ve tried a Paleo lifestyle in the past and cutting out food groups such as grains, sugar and dairy is not all that hard if you are a meat eater and like vegetables which I do. But then I came to two rules I did not think I could or would follow. Somehow I talked myself into it and for the first time in my life (after dozens and dozens of dieting attempts) I have followed a diet which does not feel like a diet at all. You feel like you are just taking really good care of yourself and treating yourself to high quality, high nutrient, delicious food. The first rule I thought would be hard to follow is no alcohol. I stuck with it but one night had a glass of wine. Guess what? I ate everything in sight. No more wine. Second rule which I thought would be impossible to follow is no weighing yourself. This terrified me. What if it wasn’t working… how would I know? In the past I would weigh myself every day on a diet and if I happened to be up a few ounces because of water weight or my monthly cycle, I would get very frustrated and angry and think why bother? Then I would proceed to eat everything in site. This has gone on for YEARS!! So for the first time i have forced myself to stay off the scale. It was not easy, but for the first time I have stuck to a diet with no stress, no obsessing, no frustration, no binging… I lost 7 lbs in about 10 days before a trip (just had to take a peak at my weight!) and looked my best in a bikini. LOVE this diet!!! Follow all the rules… these people know what they are talking about. Also a tip: One day I ate fruit earlier in the day (I usually naturally crave fruit after dinner for something sweet before bed) and by night time I was having cravings. Didn’t happen on any of the days I ate my fruit at night. Also eating your carbs (fruit, potatoes etc…) before bed helps you to sleep. One other thing… if you continue to consume the same amount of food while on this diet, the weight loss will be very slow or nonexistent. If one of your goals is weight loss I found you also need to reduce portion sizes which can be done easily by using smaller plates (7″) as opposed to our modern day plate sizes (10-12″).

I’d highly recommend that you get and read this book. I would’ve reviewed it earlier, except I’m a slow reader. I’ve lost 25 pounds and don’t even do everything they say, but mostly cut out the sugar, dairy, and high-carb junk. It was easier than I thought. I love how unapologetic the book is about things like alcohol. They don’t say “maybe it’s not good for you.” And also they talk to you like you’re an adult, which is highly appreciated. Also, you can start by following them on Instagram, check out their posts, and then buy the book. And see the 12 million posts with #Whole30 for recipes on Instagram. There is lots of support online in the community. Also, I love how they say to try it for 30 days and focus on how you feel, not the scale.

I came into the Whole30 world through the back door. I am 50 years old and have always been athletic and committed to working out. I also thought of myself as a rather healthy eater. My son told me that he was starting a Whole30 to reset his eating. I had never heard of it, but since I had picked up about 15 pounds that I wanted to take off I looked it up. I printed out the food lists of dos and don’ts and went to work. I did not read the book before starting and was strictly doing Whole30 to lose some weight. I did not find it that difficult to transition into the eating plan as I was not eating much sugar, no bread, etc, but boy was I surprised at the results! I lost six pounds the first week. Now granted, it must have been mainly water because I peed like crazy the first few days, but that was great for me as I had been feeling really bloated. I felt really good, too. Lots of energy, and after decades of being a very poor sleeper, I started sleeping all night!! I also noticed that the episodes of low blood sugar that I have experienced off and on my whole life had completely disappeared. And my hip that had hurt for over 20 years stopped hurting, too! About 3 weeks into my Whole30 I decided to get the It Starts With Food book and read it to see what the plan was all about. I was having such good results with the weight loss, and feeling so good that I was curious. I wish I had read the book before I started the Whole30. It is one of the most interesting books I have ever read! I was fascinated by the explanations of how food works in my body. I had no idea about most of this stuff, even though I had a pretty healthy lifestyle. I highly recommend reading the book, even if you’re only doing Whole30 just to lose weight (which is a no-no!) The book is especially interesting if you work out and want to know the best way to fuel and re-fuel your body. I know you’re not supposed to weigh yourself on Whole30, but I did and I lost 10 pounds the first month. I love eating Whole30 because I get to eat a ton of yummy food! I have lost weight several times in the past and had to adhere to a strict 1200 calories a day and up my workouts to 2 a day to get the weight off. It is unbelievable to me how much I can eat doing this and still lose weight! It’s been about 3 weeks since the end of my Whole30, but I’m still doing it because I feel so good! I really just want to eat this way forever now!!

A must have explanation of what really goes on when we eat.

After you read the well written description in this book of how “good” and “bad” foods impact your health, you will want to follow the author’s plan (NOT a diet – an eating plan) that you can easily carry forward beyond the 30 day plan period. I bought in to the plan primarily because of the total logic outlined in the book. Other plan’s I have pursued have all crashed and burned after some period of time. With other plans you reach the “diet graduation day” and then return to the real world (i.e. your former eating patterns). Not only does this Whole30 plan get you to graduation feeling great but it launches you into your post plan life WANTING to continue eating healthy. You at least need to read this book. If you do, you will be hooked (in a good way). I have also read the author’s follow on book named “Whole30”. Honestly I much prefer “It Starts With Food” because it so clearly explains the why’s of the plan whereas “Whole30” is more general description and the bulk of the book is primarily a recipe (albeit good recipes) collection. I bought this book on Kindle and then choose to also order the actual book so I could easily refer to it when I want to relearn some of the principles. Can you tell I love this book?

I bought this book in October 2013 where my husband and I set out and completed our first Whole 30. We are both 40 something and both carry extra weight. He is overweight and I was firmly in the obese category. My first Whole 30, I lost 17 lbs and more than 9 inches off of my body. My husband lost 11 lbs and inches off of his waist (he is thin everywhere else… a classic apple shape). We did all of this through nutritional changes at that time, as life made it impossible to exercise. Don’t worry, we now regularly exercise, too.

Day 27: I recommend “It Starts with Food” by Dallas & Melissa Hartwig. Renea Vogel recommended I read the book last summer I believe and I bought the e-book and read it. I thought it was interesting but didn’t put too much stock into it because of all the “diets” I had been on in the past. When she came to visit in October she talked to me and answered some Paleo questions I had and it got me curious again – so I read through it and thought hmm, it clearly helps her. So I started eliminating a few things here and there. But after I visited her early in April, I came home with a new resolve. While I was there, she showed me how she shopped, did a weekly cook up, and explained more about what The Whole 30 has done for her. As soon as I got home – I poured through the pages of the book with an understanding I had never had before! So I said – this is for ME and I will succeed. I immediately put into practice what I had learned from the book and Renea. I am in so much less pain-almost none except the self-inflicted from exercise, I am no longer bloated or having any gastro issues of any kind, I have loads of energy-enough to exercise! I didn’t have any cravings until about the 20th day because I was so focused but I have pushed through it and persevered. I want to eat like this for the rest of my life! I have never felt that way about the way I was eating. It is so important to me that I will work extra days at whatever job I need to in order to buy whole foods and organic foods – because I would rather have a large food bill than large medical bills and I want my family to be healthy too!! Oh – and the bonus, I have lost 10 pounds in 27 days and several inches! Thank you Dallas & Melissa and thank you Renea – you have given me the best gift I have ever received!
