Life Changing – In More Ways Than One

I am a runner so my eating has been centered around carbs. As a result, I love carbs. I have run several 1/2 marathons but wanted to do at least one full marathon – so at 43, I trained and completed my first full marathon in April. I did not do nearly as well as I had hoped and I noticed towards the end of my training I was experiencing what I would consider an extra amount of fatigue – I also lost no weight whatsoever during my training, something I always do. I chalked it up to too much training and figured after my marathon I would rest and get back to normal. A week after my marathon, I decided to hit the gym and start weight training but had no drive and just felt tired. This feeling just got worse – to the point I thought I needed to see the Dr.

I bought three books centering on this diet. It makes sense to read this one FIRST so prepare mentally for the restrictions. You have plenty of choices, but of course, you give up a enough types of foods that you’ll miss after a few days. Of course, it is a diet, so you have to be willing to make sacrifices! Though I’m not specifically following this diet right now, it does help you make better food choices, which is good thing!

This should be a must read for everyone who eats. This book is informative with simple to understand scientific data and examples. My husband and I have just completed our first Whole30 and it has changed the way we view food. Our choices either benefit our health or they don’t. Life changing book! Thank you Hartwigs.

I have read other books about the paleo way of eating, and while I understood the arguments for adopting such a plan, I have found putting the principles into practice overwhelming and impossible to follow for any extended period of time. It Starts with Food changed everything. I am on day 28 of my first Whole 30 and have no intentions of ever going back to my old diet. I feel great! I have more energy, my joint pains are gone, and the best part is that I no longer crave my old comfort foods. I have always struggled with my weight and while I ate what I thought were “healthy” foods my relationship with food in general remained an unhealthy one. Today I feel totally in control for the first time in my life. The meal maps in the book make planning and preparing meals super easy. I am no longer overwhelmed, and feel confident that I can do this the rest of my much healthier life.

You won’t regret giving this a try!

It’s amazing how much we do not know about the food we eat. Loved the way this book is written….easy to understand and well organized. My husband, who is not a big reader, read this book cover to cover in a few days! He has transformed before my eyes now that he is equipped with this knowledge. It is not an easy journey (Whole 30), but it is worth it! If you battle with chronic issues with your body, it may well be the food you are eating. I have MS and feel my symptoms have lessened. Hopefully, I will be able to keep the MS at bay and maintain an active lifestyle by continuing to follow Whole 30 principals. It starts with food!! My 70+ mom has successfully read my copy of the book and completed a Whole 30…..she has lessened her meds and surprised her doctors with her improvements! There is no harm in giving this a try.

There’s some good ideas and a LOT of science. I wish the book would have focused a little more on suggestion about how to manage the diet and a little less on the science of why it should work.

This book is a must-read for anyone who takes an interest in good nutrition. I have been reading books on nutrition for years. Many of those nutrition books were written by very authoritative authors on the subject, yet many/most contradicted one another. It was very frustrating! I would buy into one school of thought only to find it was not effective with me, so I’d try another with the same result. My understanding was fragmented bits and pieces of knowledge that really didn’t all fit together. It didn’t make sense. Dallas and Melissa Hartwig basically just painted one big, easy to understand picture. Now I get the total body interaction with each thing I ingest. It makes sense. Their book ties up all the loose ends, and makes you WANT to eat healthy. But wanting to eat healthy is the first step. Once you actually start the Whole30 plan, then you start to see the genious behind it. You lose weight, sleep better and feel better. It really is not a crazy, painful dietary shift. You finally open your eyes to all the crap that is in the easy to get foods, and start seeking out healthy options. I have recommended this book to all of my friends, and for those who have taken the time to read it, I frequently get the same response, “I finally get it!”
