I bought this book in January 2016, after hearing an interview with Dr. Greger on a podcast. At first I found it hard to read, but not because it difficult or confusing, but because it was changing everything I thought I knew about food. I had lost 45 lbs already by eating “healthier.”

How Not to Die is a fantastic read and reference book. Fans of Dr Greger’s popular website, nutritionfacts.org, will not be disappointed. Having worked with him closely for the last 4 years, I will assure you his search for as he calls it, an evidence-based diet, trumps any ideology labels that might be tossed his way. Make no mistake about it, he is an advocate of increasing whole plant food in the diet, but he’s in no way blinded by it. On more than one occasion we’ve exchanged new journal articles only to step back and question – do we believe this because it is true or because it is a beautiful story? He is driven to seek out the evidence no matter where that answer might lead.

As I lay on the hard, cold operating table, waiting for the anesthetic to kick in for my colonoscopy (not routine but for symptoms, which I won’t bore you with) it hit me…with all the testing, anesthesiologist, doctor appointments, etc,, this colonoscopy will cost the same as a cruise! For the same price that would get me a week in the Caribbean sun, lying on deck of a cruise ship drinking margaritas, listening to reggae music and watching the waves go by, I was going to get a lighted probe stuck up my butt. (I’m self employed, huge deductible, so all medical care is essentially out of my own pocket). It was too late to bolt and run for the sea…I was stuck. But I pledged right then to take better care of my health, which would not only (hopefully) free me from an early grave, but would free my wallet from the death- grip of a hospital billing department.

This is the best book on the science of nutrition that I have read in years. On the one hand, it’s a large volume. On the other hand, it’s broken up nicely into bite-sized pieces, with chapters that focus on fifteen key ailments, including (of course) the big ones: Heart Disease, Cancer, Obesity, Diabetes. Although each chapter is packed with painstakingly cited information, the writing is exactly what writing should be: Fast-paced and unobtrusive. In short, both the information and the reading experience are excellent, which is a powerful combination that is not often realized.

Being familiar with Dr. Michael Greger’s web site and the free audio talks I knew the material would be good, but wondered about its readability. It was a pleasant surprise to find the book an enjoyable read, it does not read like typical medical literature. He finds ways to make nutritional information interesting and humors: “Want fries with That Lipitor?”. And even when covering a subject I’d normally consider to be dry, like oxidative stress, he adds metaphors and keeps the subject simple and fun.

I grabbed the audible edition as it is great to listen on road on commute and is a great listen!! Audio book is great for listening in car or while on a morning run. I have a hard copy too! Each chapter is less than an hour and there are over 30 chapters in the audible book.I have given list of other books at the end which will cement the ideas in this book and make you more aware if you like this book.

This isn’t the usual book you might pick up on diet, health, and nutrition. How Not To Die is exceptional. As others have said, there’s an incredible amount of well-researched information inside, and it’s also enjoyable. I ordered a hardcover book and a Kindle edition for my husband and me – so we could read it at the same time.

I’ve read a lot of books on eating whole foods, plant-based, and I am a graduate of the Cornell University program in Plant-Based Nutrition. And when I ordered this book, I thought it would be a rehash of many things I already knew. But I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting the book was and about how down to earth it was. And it is truly based on science. There are 150 pages of referenced footnotes at the end of the book to indicate all of the scientific studies that back up what Dr. Greger is saying.

This book is worth its weight in gold–which is saying something, because it is a tome. The first half of the book is dedicated to reviewing the research published in peer-reviewed medical journals on the effect of nutrition on the 15 leading causes of death in the U.S. Although similar in content to Dr. Greger’s videos on nutritionfacts.org, he goes into much more detail in the book than he is able to do in his videos. The second half of the book is Dr. Greger’s personal dietary recommendations based on his decades of immersion in the medical literature. By distilling down the voluminous evidence to daily nutritional “prescriptions,” Dr. Greger makes it easy to eat a healthy diet based on evidence. And “evidence” is really the key word here–not just anecdotal or the result of one or two studies, but that based on thousands of clinical and epidemiological studies of millions of people. If you are tired of and frustrated by all the contradictory theories promulgated by self-proclaimed nutritional gurus, do yourself a favor and just stick to the science. What does the science say? Dr. Greger makes it accessible to all of us here.
