Essential oils during pregnancy can work well together in a positive way. We must always remember that good quality essential oils are highly concentrated, so when we are pregnant, we must use sparingly. When using essential oils in the ‘neat’ form you must dilute them with a carrier oil, one of the better carriers l like using is Grape-seed Oil, as it has little aroma and when adding the essential oil, does not corrupt the scent. When we use essential oils, whether via massage or diffuser we must understand once we ingest them, they work in the same way as pharmaceutical medicines. So there is a possibility they may cross the placenta, it is very important to only use essential oils that are known to be safe during pregnancy.
Nobody knows exactly the effect essential oils during pregnancy have on the developing baby, but one thing we do know is there are more positives than negatives.
Always use just one drop of essential oil to at least 5 drops of a carrier oil and a good thing to do is change your essential oil daily. If in doubt, always consult your professional Aromatherapist.
Essential oils that are known to be safe to use during a healthy pregnancy are, Tangerine, Chamomile, Lavender, Frankincense, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Eucalyptus, Cypress, Geranium and Spearmint, Tea tree oil is safe to use, but not recommended while you are in labor.
Essential Oils that are not to be used while you are pregnant are, Nutmeg, Jasmine, Sage, Rose, Rosemary, Juniper Berry. There are some essential oils that can stimulate contractions, so it is best to avoid these, they include Laurel, Citronella and Angelica Oils.
One thing we must remember and that is, these wonderful oils have been around for centuries and have been used for pregnancy and therapeutic management, because they have the ability to promote and enhance a healthy enjoyable pregnancy.
